Ito ay Tahanan | This is Home

Filipino Photographers | Artists together in a Photo Exhibition

The Common Ground Kolektiv's first Photo | Art Exhibition was a milestone event, and we are thrilled to share it with you, featuring 12 Filipino photographers and artists, from hobbyists to professionals with varying backgrounds, in Oslo, Norway's city centre on June 1, 2024.

The exhibition is a culmination of efforts to bring together and highlight the creativity of Filipinos living and working in Norway, all of whom share a common passion for photography and the arts.

The photo exhibition created a positive atmosphere and received overwhelming feedback from fellow Filipinos, curious crowds, Norwegians, and even onlookers. The moments that made it possible were humbling and inspiring for everyone involved.

The exhibition's theme revolves around the phrase "Ito ay Tahanan | This is Home". Each photographer has interpreted the statement according to the photography genre they lean into. The featured photographers and artists include Grace Orbon-Emmelot, Immy Rempis, Jaijai Lee, Josh Agustin, Jay Diaz, Kiko Bustamante, Nea Torres, Rhyan Elivera Olivo, Star, Angelove Diaz, Chewin Monzon, Danica Ingiaen, and Cherokee Dawn.

The Common Ground Kolektiv Group's objective is to offer a platform that showcases the diverse ways photography can be utilised for creative expression and storytelling. Through their lenses, each photographer presents their perspective on how Filipino lives thrive and evolve in Norway, capturing fleeting and unseen moments of life in the diaspora. They highlight how they have adapted and coped with their new home as immigrants or overseas workers. The event mentioned included a Filipino painter as one of its participants.

Francia Pena De and Marcel Ingles proposed a photo exhibition idea they shared with the Common Ground Kolektiv Group through Grace Orbon-Emmelot. Grace then tapped photographers from different parts of Norway and even those who have worked in Norway.

"I have been dreaming of connecting with other creatives such as photographers, painters, writers, and performers since I moved to Norway. I talked to others about a collective exhibition when I had my small photo exhibit at the Philippine Embassy in 2021. When the opportunity arose, I devoted my energy to gathering participants. This exhibit was a very challenging first attempt, but the positive outcome of this first exhibit inspired the group and me to continue building connections." The Common Ground Kolektiv Group will continue to make more connections and, hopefully, work on more collaborative projects in the future."

The exhibition coincides with the Philippine Independence Day, which Kalayaan Norge organised. The Common Ground Group Kolektiv profoundly appreciates the support and the opportunity received, particularly in light of the challenges overcome to make everything possible.

Common Ground Kolektiv

Common Ground is a creative community that provides space and a platform for individuals with diverse backgrounds to merge and unleash their creativity. It allows group members to collaborate, share ideas, and work on projects, ultimately fostering a community passionate about creating something new, old, different or inspirational. Being a part of the Common Ground community means connecting with anyone, promoting inclusivity, and creating an ingenious space. The key is to build connections to help the artists grow and evolve.

Common Ground Kolektiv was prompted in 2021 as an independent entity but only became active this year by Grace Orbon-Emmelot, a photographer and artist constantly navigating creative paths with other Filipinos in the diaspora.

Common Ground is a creative community that provides space and a platform for individuals with diverse backgrounds to merge and unleash their creativity. It allows group members to collaborate, share ideas, and work on projects, ultimately fostering a community passionate about creating something new, old, different or can be inspirational too. To be a part of the Common Ground community is to connect with creatives and non-creatives alike, promoting inclusivity and creating an ingenious space. We strongly believe that building connections is the key to helping artists grow and evolve.
